GE Honda Aero Engines is to build the HF120 turbofan to power the HondaJet and Spectrum Freedom business jets in Burlington, North Carolina. This follows Honda’s decision earlier this year to build the HondaJet in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The 50:50 joint venture between Honda Aero and GE Aircraft Engines plans to invest $23 million to build its headquarters and manufacturing plant adjacent to Burlington-Alamance regional airport.

Construction will begin immediately, with production of the 2,050lb-thrust HF120 planned to begin in late 2010. The plan is expected to produce 200 engines a year, according to Honda Aero president and chief executive Fumitaka Hasagawa.

Development of the HF120 was formally launched in October 2006, and certification testing is to begin in 2008. US certification of the engine is scheduled for 2009, with certification and entry into service of the HondaJet planned for 2010.
