Pilot organisation the European Cockpit Association has welcomed the European transport and tourism committee's rejection of proposed new pan-European pilot flight time limitation rules.
The ECA maintains that the rules – prepared by the European Commission and European Aviation Safety Agency – are based on politics and airline lobbying, not on science as was promised by the Commission. Extension of duty time beyond existing practises under certain circumstances, as was proposed, would be dangerous, the pilots allege.
But while the committee voted 21-13 against the measure, the European Parliament will vote again on the same proposal in a plenary session. That vote is expected to take place in the week beginning 21 October, because the deadline for a decision falls on 25 October.
