Pionair plans to launch freighter services from Australia to Papua New Guinea using a Convair 580.

The carrier says in its application to the Australian International Air Services Commission that "the 18,000kg of capacity [it has applied for] will allow three weekly flights".

"Capacity will be utilised incrementally from July 2010 and be fully utilised by end July 2011," it adds.

Pionair says it is looking at having services from Brisbane and Cairns to Port Moresby and other destinations in Papua New Guinea.

The Convair 580 gives Pionair "a unique capability in the PNG context in that we are able to operate to and from more austere runways", it adds.

Pionair plans to use its Australian air operator's certificate for the services, it says.
