VivaColombia co-founder Juan Emilio Posada will become chief executive of the Colombian low-cost carrier, as Barry Biffle leaves to join Frontier Airlines.
Posada will take over the helm at Medellin-based VivaColombia on 24 April, he tells Flightglobal. He had served as VivaColombia's chairman, but Declan Ryan will take over the chairman position with Posada's transition to the chief executive role.
Ryan is one of Ryanair's founders and is managing partner of Irelandia Aviation, which has a stake in VivaColombia.
Frontier announced yesterday that Biffle will leave VivaColombia after less than a year to become president at Denver-based Frontier with effect from 16 July. Formerly chief marketing officer at Spirit Airlines, Biffle had joined VivaColombia only in August 2013.
Posada says Biffle resigned in January, and that he and his family had to return to the USA "for personal reasons". "Barry did a great job here with us," he adds. Biffle, when contacted by Flightglobal, says the Frontier offer is a "great opportunity".
Posada has almost 20 years of experience in the airline industry, and was previously chief executive of Latin American airline group Avianca. He oversaw the airline when it went through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection process.
