EADS' German aerostructure subsidiary Premium Aerotec has officially opened its component manufacturing plant in Ghimbav, Romania.
Production already started in December, after the facility's first construction phase had been completed, but the second section was not finished until now.
The site fabricates and assembles metal components for all current Airbus series programmes (A320-family, A330, A380) but has also been earmarked to produce structural components for the A350 and A400M military transport in future.
Premium Aerotec invested around €40 million ($56.5 million) in the 60,000m² (646,000ft²) facility in the Aeropark Brasov, which also includes a MRO centre of the EADS sister company Eurocopter as well as the Romanian aerostructure and helicopter maintenance specialist IAR Brasov.
Romania's government has supported EADS' activities in the Eastern European country, including the Eurocopter facility, with €19 million.
Output at the Premium Aerotec site is to be gradually increased with Airbus's planned aircraft production ramp-up until the end of 2012. The number of employees will grow to more than 500 by then, the component manufacturer said.
