Qatar Airways wants to defer the introduction of the Airbus A380 if the issues around cracked wing components have not been resolved by the planned first delivery date next year.

The Doha-based carrier has ordered 10 of the double-decker aircraft and has options for another three, with deliveries due to begin in October 2013.

A spokesman for the airline tells Flightglobal that the hand-over "may be delayed" if no solution has been implemented for the wing manufacturing issues, which have resulted in checks on the global fleet for cracks in rib support brackets.

Qatar Airways does not want to take the aircraft before a modification to resolve the problem has been completed, he adds.

Airbus was not immediately available for comment.
