Qatar has set a launch date of 1 April for the first-phase opening of the newly renamed Hamad International airport in Doha.
The soft launch of the $15.5 billion project will see 12 international passenger airlines operating from the facility, including unspecified low-cost carriers.
Commercial operations will be gradually transitioned over from the existing Doha International airport.
Dual operation of the two hubs will persist until the second half of 2013.
"Hamad International airport will truly be a global showpiece that the State of Qatar will justifiably be proud of," says Abdul Aziz Al Noami, chairman of Qatar's civil aviation authority.
He adds that the airport is set to become an "international gateway that will firmly put our country on the global stage".
Hamad International airport will initially have an annual capacity of 28 million when it opens this year. That figure will rise to 50 million beyond 2015.
