Grounded Russian carrier Red Wings has named Sergei Belov as its new director general, signalling confidence that it will resume services.

Red Wings says Belov will replace Leonid Itskov, whose managerial contract has been terminated.

Belov had been director of St Petersburg-based carrier Rossiya for three years until last January.

Regulator Rosaviatsia is expected to make a decision about permitting Red Wings to resume operations on 5 May.

It grounded the Tupolev Tu-204 operator in early February, following a fatal overrun accident involving one of its aircraft at Moscow Vnukovo airport.

During a subsequent inspection, Rosaviatsia identified issues regarding the carrier's financial situation, work schedules and maintenance. It also levelled criticism squarely at Itskov.
