Republic Q400 returns to Newark due to smoke

A Republic Airlines Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International airport due to reports of smoke in the cabin.

Smoke was detected in the cabin shortly after take off from Newark and the aircraft immediately returned to the airport, the Indianapolis-based regional carrier says.

The Q400 was only in the air for 18min, according to the website FlightAware.com.

The aircraft was operating flight 4890 from Newark to Pittsburgh as United Express. All 27 passengers and four crewmembers disembarked safely.
