Australian regional carrier Regional Express (Rex) is dropping services to Olympic Dam, a major mining centre in the state of South Australia.

Rex says in a statement that it will discontinue Adelaide-Olympic Dam services on 2 July as BHP Billiton, which owns the Olympic Dam airport and the Olympic Dam mining operation, awarded a charter contract for the route to another carrier it does not identify.

Rex was formed in 2002 from the former Ansett Australia subsidiaries Hazelton Airlines and Kendell Airlines. Kendell began flying to Olympic Dam, which is around 550km north of Adelaide, more than 20 years ago.
