Brussels airport took the top honour at this year's World Routes Awards.

Judges recognised the airport's success in route development, securing 11 more passenger destinations and six new airlines since October 2011.

Alongside Brussels, which was also the winner of the European category, the other regional winners were the airports Dallas/Fort Worth in the Americas, Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta in Africa, Singapore's Changi in Asia and Ekaterinburg Koltsovo in the CIS category.

Darwin in Australia was recognised in the new category for airports with under 4 million passengers, and the Seychelles Tourism Board won the award for best destination marketing campaign by a tourism authority.

SkyTeam carrier Air France-KLM meanwhile picked up the Orbis award for social responsibility, in recognition of its partnership with the non-governmental organisation Acting for Life.
