Swiss aerospace and defence group RUAG has opened a new production hall at its site in Emmen that could eventually be used for civilian maintenance, repair and overhaul projects.

The SFr10 million ($12 million) facility will be used for an ongoing upgrade programme for the Swiss Air Force's TH89 Super Puma transport helicopters.

However, when this contract expires in 2014, it would it be possible to use the 2,600m² (28,000ft²) site for both civilian and military final assembly or MRO projects, including fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, the company said.

The facility includes workshops, storage space, office and recreation areas across three floors.
