Ryanair has applied for 16 slots at Copenhagen airport for the 2014 summer season.

A request the budget carrier has filed with the Danish slot co-ordinator covers services to a number of European destinations, including in Poland and Spain.

This is the third time the Irish airline has applied for slots at Copenhagen since 2010, although it has so far not exercised any.

A source close to Copenhagen airport notes: "There has been a change in strategy at Ryanair, it has recently begun establishing bases at capital airports around Europe."

For example, the carrier is to open a base at Brussels' main airport early next year.
