Ryanair will open a new base at Manchester Airport in October.

The base, the Irish low-cost carrier's 45th, will initially begin operating with two Boeing 737s and 17 routes, growing to four aircraft and 26 routes by summer 2012.

Ryanair claimed that the new base would attract up to 2 million passengers annually to the airport and generate up to 260 weekly flights. It said it would invest over $280 million at the airport.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary said in May 2011 that the airline was aiming to open 50 bases by spring 2012.
