Ryanair will scale back its presence in Madrid and Barcelona this winter, in the latest backlash over Spain's doubling of airport departure taxes on 1 July.

At Madrid Barajas airport, the low-cost carrier is cutting its aircraft fleet from 14 to 11, resulting in the cancellation of 11 routes and frequency cuts on 24 routes.

At Barcelona El Prat airport, the airline is cutting its aircraft fleet from 13 to 11, resulting in the cancellation of four routes and frequency cuts on 22 routes.

Spanish airports operator AENA has insisted that higher departure fees at its gateways are necessary due to the worsening economic climate in the country.
