Ryanair is to close its base at Maastricht Aachen airport in April 2014.

The Irish budget carrier attributes the decision to "a shortage of aircraft capacity".

It will continue, using aircraft stationed at other bases, to fly from Maastricht to a range of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese destinations: Alicante, Bari, Faro, Girona, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Porto, Tenerife and Tranpani.

The airline notes that the arrival of the first of 175 new Boeing aircraft, in September 2014, "will allow us to return to growth".
