Cargo carrier Silk Way West Airlines is seeking regulatory authority to fly to the USA from its home country of Azerbaijan, and plans to launch a flight to New York by winter 2014.

In a filing with the US Department of Transportation (DOT), the carrier, owned by Silk Way Airlines, seeks permission to launch both scheduled and charter flights between any points in the two countries.

Sky Way West says it plans to operate the USA flights using a Boeing 747 freighter, and, possibly, other aircraft in its fleet.

Silk Way West has three 747-400Fs and two 767-300Fs, according to the filing.

It also intends to acquire two 747-8Fs in the second half of 2014.

Silk Way West says its 747s are maintained by Cargolux.
