US start-up Skybus Airlines has received final US FAA certification, clearing the way for the low-cost carrier to launch operations.

The Columbus, Ohio-based operator, which has modelled itself on Irish budget carrier Ryanair’s bare-bones service model, says: “FAA certification is the final hurdle, and having cleared it we are ready to begin serving passengers on May 22.

“We are grateful to the FAA staff for its professionalism during the certification process, and we salute the many members of our own staff who worked long and hard to demonstrate we are ready to take our place in the US airline community.”

As previously announced, Skybus will begin Airbus A319 service from its base at Port Columbus International Airport to Burbank near Los Angeles; Kansas City; and the Boston area through Portsmouth International Airport in New Hampshire.
