Commercial flights were cancelled at the airport in St. George, Utah, today after a SkyWest Airlines pilot shot himself inside one of the carrier's Bombardier CRJ200s.

Brian Hedglin, 40, was found inside the SkyWest jet at about 00:50 by a St. George police officer, according to the local police department.

The FBI was brought in to investigate the incident because it occurred at the airport and on a commercial aircraft.

SkyWest, which is based in St. George, confirmed the aircraft was not in service when it was involved in the "ground incident".

"The aircraft did sustain damage," the carrier says. "The extent of the damage is currently being inspected by our maintenance and safety professionals."
