A Southwest Airlines Boeing 717-200 could be out of service for several weeks after receiving substantial damage from an out of control catering truck at the Milwaukee airport.
The 717 with registration N894AT is "currently in maintenance and we expect completion later this month", Southwest tells Flightglobal.
The AirTran-branded aircraft entered maintenance on 5 October after it sustained major damage on the ramp.
A catering truck driver struck the parked aircraft at the production splice joint, where the midsection connects to the forward fuselage. The driver told investigators that a beverage can had become lodged behind his brake pedal, preventing the truck from stopping.
Southwest has agreed to transfer its entire Boeing Capital-owned 717 fleet to Delta Air Lines.
