US budget carrier Southwest Airlines has contracted MTU to maintain the CFM International CFM56-3 engines for its Boeing 737-300/500s.

Repairs and overhauls for the engines will be conducted at MTU's facility in Vancouver, Canada.

But the exclusive long-term 'Total Engine Care' deal also includes technical management services, says MTU, in order to utilise the powerplants' remaining life in the most cost-effective manner while the carrier phases out the legacy aircraft.

According to Flightglobal's Ascend Online database, Southwest currently operates 127 737-300s and 20 737-500s.
