Southwest unit revenues up 4% in February

Southwest Airlines and its subsidiary AirTran Airways have reported a 4% growth in passenger unit revenues in February with a slight increase in traffic, following a decline in traffic in January.

Revenue passenger miles were up 3.9% year-on-year, says Southwest, which posted a 2.7% fall in traffic in January.

Capacity increased by 6.2%, resulting in a 1.7 percentage point fall in passenger load factor to 75.2%. Passenger numbers grew 4.3% to 7.98 million.

On a year-to-date basis, passenger traffic rose 0.4% and capacity rose 2.5%. The passenger load factor was down 1.5 percentage points to 74.8%.
