SpiceJet has issued a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange downplaying "speculative media reporting" about potential foreign direct investment by Qatar Airways.

"It will be very premature to comment on the possibilities of any fresh equity issuance to such interested parties or confirm or deny names of any specific entity," the statement reads.

There has been widespread speculation about possible Gulf investment in the Indian aviation sector in recent weeks, with AirAsia also being linked to SpiceJet, and Etihad being tied to Jet Airways and Kingfisher.

Media coverage of the sector intensified in September, when India's government relaxed ownership rules for domestic airlines by allowing stakes of up to 49% to be held overseas.
