Spirit Airlines has denied reports that it plans to relocate its Fort Lauderdale operations to Miami International airport, which it currently does not serve.

"Spirit is not planning to move its FLL operations to MIA," the airline's spokesperson tells Flightglobal. Media reports, quoting Miami city and airport officials, say Spirit plans to move some or the majority of its flights from Fort Lauderdale to Miami.

Spirit's spokesperson says Miami "does qualify as one of the many airports that could benefit from our low fares". She adds, however, that the airline has nothing to announce with regards to serving Miami.

Miramar, Florida-based Spirit has its main base at Fort Lauderdale International airport, which is popular with low-cost carriers in south Florida due to its lower costs.

New York-based JetBlue is in the midst of expanding its operations from Fort Lauderdale and has said it prefers operating out of the airport over Miami because it offers lower costs and less congestion.
