Swiss maintenance company SR Technics will provide the majority of its type training documentation as an Apple iPad application from early 2012 onwards.

Most manuals and other course material for type rating classes as well as a number of other long duration technical training courses have been converted to the electronic format, the company said.

Apart from saving paper and lightening the trainees' load in carrying material around, the digital documents allow the incorporation of other media, such as accident reports, images, videos and cockpit voice recordings.

This would "revolutionise the way we conduct training", said Markus Bürgin, head of group technical training.

The current paper-based documentation for the courses comprises between 4,000 and 8,000 pages, he said.
