US Airways today confirmed that Captain Chesley Sullenberger will return to flying on 1 October.

Sullenberger was the captain of a US Airways Airbus A320 that ditched into New York's Hudson River on 15 January after losing engine power as a result of striking Canadian geese.

He is reuniting with the first officer from that flight Jeffrey Skiles for Flight 1427 from New York's LaGuardia airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, the same route they intended to fly before the bird strike.

Sullenberger returns to US Airways in an expanded role as an active management pilot, the carrier says.
