Superjet International, the Venice-headquartered Alenia Aermacchi-Sukhoi joint venture set up to market the Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional jet, may soon seal a sale in Africa, according to president and chairman Carmelo Cosentino.

Speaking exclusively to Flightglobal Pro, Cosentino says Africa is an important region rich with opportunities for Superjet International.

SJI - which handles Superjet sales in all regions outside of Russia and the CIS, the Middle East and India, which are looked after by Sukhoi - is also bullish about building on its Americas presence, where Western launch customer Interjet of Mexico should take its first delivery this year, followed by a second in January 2013. Interjet has 15 Superjets on order.

North America, says Cosentino, is probably the world's "most sophisticated" regional jet market but offers the prospect of large-volume orders.

Cosentino is also anticipating the first CIS deal for the business aircraft variant of the Superjet, which SJI is selling globally, following orders from Switzerland's Comlux and India's Aviotech.
