TAP Portugal has switched its entire order of 12 Airbus A350-800s to the -900 variant.

The move, first predicted by FlightglobalPro in July, was revealed by TAP chief executive Fernando Pinto at the Airline Business World Air Forum in Amsterdam.

The airline had been one of the early signatories for the A350, signing up for 10 of the original A350-800 in 2005 when the type was effectively conceived as a re-engined A330.

The switch takes Airbus's backlog for the A350-800 to 119 aircraft, down from a high point of 182, with the -900 at 373.
