Airports of Thailand (AoT) has appointed consultants to help redevelop and expand Phuket International Airport.
Index Consultant, a Bangkok-based project management company, won the 72 million baht ($2.2 million) contract for the upgrades to Thailand's second largest airport.
It will prepare terms of reference for various bids related to the redevelopment, evaluate the proposals, and control the budget for the development, says AoT.
The 5.79 billion baht expansion plan include the construction of a new international terminal, an upgrade to the existing terminal which will then handle domestic passengers, the modernisation of the aircraft fuel hydrant system, and improvements to the runway, taxiway and apron to cater to Boeing 747-400 type aircraft.
When the expansion is completed in 2016, when the airport would be able to handle 12.5 million passengers a year, up from 6.5 million.
