Thales has launched a new joint venture with China Electronics Technology Avionics (CETCA) to develop and integrate in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) technology for the Comac C919.

The new venture, Thales CETC Avionics, is located in Chengdu, China and builds on a recently signed agreement between Thales and Comac under which Thales CETC Avionics will provide the TopSeries IFEC platform for the C919.

"This joint venture underscores Thales's commitment to international expansion through partnerships with best in class organisations such as CETC. Our companies share a mutual vision that will create new market opportunities and give airlines more options than ever before," says Olivier Guibert, president of Thales China and North Asia region.

The C919 is due to complete its detailed design this year and is scheduled to make its first flight in 2014.

Comac has received commitments for 380 C919 aircraft from major Chinese airlines including China Eastern Airlines, Air China and Hainan Airlines and lessors including GE Capital Aviation Services.
