Tiger Airways Australia plans to begin daily flights between Melbourne and Cairns from 16 September.

The low-cost carrier will operate Airbus A320 aircraft on the route.

"We're thrilled to be flying to Cairns, providing another new destination and new catchment area in the far north of Queensland," says Tiger Airways Australia's commercial director Steve Burns.

Tiger will compete on the route against Qantas Airways, Jetstar and Virgin Blue, according to schedules in Innovata.
