United Airlines has joined Delta Air Lines in instituting a $3 surcharge on flights from the US to Europe.

Neither carrier would confirm the new charges are related to the 1 January inclusion of aviation into the EU's Emissions Trading System (ETS). Delta's charge took effect over the weekend.

Star Alliance member Lufthansa has said it plans to pass along the price of participating in the controversial emissions trading system to its customers through existing fuel surcharges.
