United Airlines has requested authority from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to fly between Austin and San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, from on or around 6 June.

The Chicago-based Star Alliance member would operate seasonal Saturday-only flights on an Airbus A319, according to a regulatory filing.

Southwest Airlines-subsidiary AirTran Airways applied for authority to operate three-times weekly on the route with a Boeing 737-700 from 2 June, earlier in January.

No airlines fly between Austin and Cabo, according to Innovata schedules.

United flies once-weekly between Austin and Cancun.
