US Airways hopes to join American Airlines in the Oneworld alliance in the first quarter of 2014, says US Airways president Scott Kirby.
“We intend to move out of Star quickly,” he says, noting that US Airways stopped selling tickets linked to the Star Alliance “several months” ago. He notes that the delay in achieving a merger has allowed the carriers to work more on integrating their systems.
“We’ve used the last three months to get even further ahead to get the integration moving from day one,” says Kirby.
On 7 January the carriers will make many of passenger-facing changes to introduce the brand of the combined carrier, such as rolling out a reciprocal frequent flyer programme, he says.
US Airways and American announced today that they have reached a settlement with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in its challenge of the proposed merger. The airlines expect the merger to be complete in December. The terms of the settlement must be approved by the bankruptcy court.
