US Airways bolsters flights from LaGuardia

US Airways plans a push from New York's LaGuardia airport in October with the introduction of daily nonstop flights operated by its regional partners to seven new destinations.

Two of the new markets, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Hartford, Connecticut, currently have no nonstop flights from LaGuardia.

Joining those two markets in gaining new service by US Airways starting 31 October are Asheville, North Carolina; Columbia and Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina; Lexington, Kentucky; and Washington Dulles.

With the exception of Washington, Dulles, US Airways Express will compete with Delta Connection carriers in each market, according to Innovata. At Washington Dulles the US Airways Express flights are competing directly with United Express Service.

A US Airways spokeswoman says the carrier is supporting the new service introduction through the return of its slots at LaGuardia that were previously on short-term lease.

Both US Airways and Delta have announced plans to bolster flights from New York since their proposed slot swap at Washington National and LaGuardia was rejected by US regulators. The two carriers have appealed the decision.

Delta plans to introduce four new domestic flights from New York airports in September, including new flights from LaGuardia to St. Louis and Nashville.

Delta also plan to inaugurate seven new markets from Washington National on 31 October supported by some slots it had subleased to other carriers.

Roughly a year ago US Airways agreed to transfer 125 pairs of Express slots at LaGuardia to Delta while Delta in turn sought to give US Airways 42 slot pairs at Washington National.

But US regulators required the divestiture of 14 slot pairs at National and 20 at LaGuardia in order to give their approval to the transaction.

Delta and US Airways calculated that represented a divestment of 16% of the slots at LaGuardia and 33% at Washington National covered in their proposed deal, and argued it hampered their ability to add new nonstop service between key business markets and small- and medium-sized communities in the USA.
