US Airways has informed the New York Department of Labour that it intends to layoff 299 employees at its Piedmont Airlines subsidiary between March and July of next year.

The layoffs stem from a slot swap deal recently concluded between US Airways and Delta Air Lines at New York LaGuardia and Washington National airports. US Airways is transferring 132 slot pairs at LaGuardia to Delta and receiving 42 at National from Delta.

US Airways warned of the layoffs back in 2009 when the two carriers first announced their proposed slot swap as the trade of its Express slots to Delta at LaGuardia would drastically reduce its presence at the airport.

In the official notification to New York state US Airways said the layoffs would occur in two stages on 25 March and 11 July.
