An internationally recognised expert on fatigue and sleep disorders was sworn in today as a member of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Mark Rosekind has worked at NASA Ames Research Centre and served as director of the Centre for Human Sleep Research. Rosekind most recently served as president and chief scientist of Alertness Solutions, a scientific consulting firm. His term on the board expires 31 December 2014.

The NTSB also swore in Earl Weener, a licensed pilot who most recently served as a consultant and a fellow for the Flight Safety Foundation where he worked on accident reduction programmes. He also worked at the Boeing Company, holding three chief engineer positions. His term expires 31 December 2015.

The two new board members replace outgoing board members Kitty Higgins and Mark Rosenker.
