Etihad to buy Air India’s 777-200LRs

Etihad Airways has signed a letter of intent to purchase five Boeing 777-200LR aircraft from Air India.

Four units (MSNs 36300, 36301, 36302 and 36303) were manufactured in 2007, while the fifth aircraft (MSN 36304) was built in February 2008.

Subject to approvals, the aircraft will be delivered to Etihad from early 2014, with the first jet expected to enter service in April.

The carrier says it intends to use the aircraft on its new route between Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles, slated to start next June, as well as on routes to South America.

This deal, if approved, will end Air India’s long-running efforts to sell off five of its 777-200LRs. The Indian operator has been trying to sell the five aircraft since last October, after failing in three earlier attempts to find a bidder that was willing to take them on a dry lease.
