Virgin America returns to second-quarter profitability

Virgin America made an operating profit of $27.9 million in the quarter ending 30 June, reversing a loss of $4.1 million in the same period of 2012.

A net profit of $8.8 million contrasted with a net loss of $31.8 million last year.

Second-quarter revenue rose 8.3% to $376 million, and load factor four percentage points to 83.7%.

The first-half operating result was a profit of $12.9 million, which compares with a loss of $52.7 million a year ago.

But the net result for 2013's first six months was a loss of $37.5 million, narrowed from last year's $108 million loss,

Six-month revenue was up 10.3% to $677 million.
