Virgin America has filed an application with the US Department of Transportation to approve its codeshare agreement with Virgin Australia.

The codeshare will place Virgin Australia's code on flights operated by Virgin America from Los Angeles to Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle and Washington DC, says Virgin America.

"We believe this partnership will be welcomed by travellers on both sides of the Pacific, especially our most loyal guests - those who seek out the upscale service and amenities that the Virgin branded carriers are known for around the world," says Virgin America's vice-president for planning and sales, Diana Walke.

Virgin Australia will also be the airline's first codeshare partner, expanding its partnership from an interline agreement.
