Virgin Australia has applied to Australia's International Air Services Commission for an allocation of 400 seats per week beyond Singapore to Colombo.

The carrier is planning to offer codeshare services on flights operated by Singapore Airlines (SIA) on the Australia-Singapore-Colombo route.

The capacity it is seeking may be used to provide joint services with SIA, it adds.

Virgin is requesting the capacity for a period of five years and plans to fully utilise it by 26 October.
