Virgin Australia will launch daily flights between Cairns and Weipa once the route is deregulated in 2014.
The carrier says that it will deploy ATR 72 turboprop aircraft on the route, but has not specified a start date.
Virgin's announcement comes after the Queensland state government announced that it would fully deregulate the route by the end of next year. QantasLink, the only carrier currently serving the route, operates 17 weekly services with Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s.
Weipa is the largest town on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland, Australia.
