Virgin Nigeria granted three-month stay on brand deadline

Virgin Nigeria's deadline to rebrand the carrier has been shifted to early October, but Virgin Atlantic's plan to withdraw as a primary shareholder remains unchanged.

The Lagos-based carrier had originally been instructed to remove the 'Virgin' association from its branding by 7 July.

But a Virgin Atlantic spokesman says that, following talks with the Nigerian aviation minister, this deadline has shifted to 7 October for "various reasons" - including a need to accommodate logistical issues.

The spokesman says, however, that Virgin Atlantic - which has 49% of the African airline - is still planning to withdraw much of its shareholding, although he indicates that it may retain a small minority stake.

Virgin Nigeria has not disclosed any new identity, although brands such as 'Nigerian Eagle' and 'Air Nigeria' have been considered.
