Mexico's Volaris has finally confirmed its first route to Mexico City's International airport, unveiling plans to launch a single daily flight with an Airbus A320 from Tijuana on 22 March.

The new pairing, which is an overnight flight and is already bookable through the Volaris website, marks a departure from the airline's previous strategy to serve all routes from Mexico City's secondary airport in Toluca.

Volaris points out in a statement that starting operations to Mexico City is not a "shift in [its] commercial and operational strategy", and that Toluca will continue to be the airline's operational centre.

In January, Volaris marketing director Jose Calderoni confirmed to ATI the carrier's intention to operate flights to Mexico City, as "just another airport" in its network.
