Swiss regional carrier Darwin Airline has contracted Volga-Dnepr Technics (VDT) for aircraft technical assistance and maintenance support at Leipzig Halle airport in Germany.

Darwin will use VDT hangar facilities to carry out maintenance checks on Saab 2000s, and the MRO provider – an arm of Russian group Volga-Dnepr – is to make support personnel available to the airline.

Additionally, the contract covers AOG support where VDT's approvals permit.

The support specialist is also leasing office and warehouse space to Darwin.

Flightglobal's Ascend Online database lists the airline's active fleet as comprising 10 Saab 2000 turboprops plus two ATR 72s.

Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways has taken a one-third stake in Lugano-based Darwin, which is to be rebranded as Etihad Regional.
