Vueling expects to encounter only a minimal near-term impact during its takeover by IAG.
"I don't expect a tremendous amount of IAG-induced change, certainly in the short to medium term," says Alex Cruz, chief executive of the Barcelona-based low-cost carrier.
Cruz says he has been "very encouraged by all the comments that the leadership of IAG has been making", and that he does not foresee "interference" with his airline's "processes or culture". Rather, the new owners will provide "support to make Vueling a better airline", he predicts.
In reference to IAG-owned Iberia, Cruz comments: "A tremendous amount of effort, time and attention, is being put on restructuring an airline that requires restructuring."
In Cruz's view, "the traditional legacy airline model no longer works in the short and medium haul". He adds: "We're seeing pretty much every traditional airline across Europe making changes, which range from light changes... to very deep changes such as the one that Iberia is going through."
