Vueling looks set to shut up shop in Toulouse after Air France's "irrational decision" to launch an offensive at the southern French city.

Speaking at the 2012 World Low Cost Airlines Congress in London, Vueling chief executive Alex Cruz told Flightglobal that the closure of the regional base in Toulouse was likely due to a lack of profitability after Air France also began basing aircraft in the French city.

"We love Toulouse, but it's a place that for the moment we're won't grow," he said.

Vueling opened its base in Toulouse in spring 2011 and the city will remain a destination in Vueling's network, says Cruz, adding: "We went in...with the assumption that there would be one rational entrant in the base which would be EasyJet. What we were not expecting was Air France to make the irrational decision to set up a base there."
