The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has awarded type certification to the Xian Aircraft MA60, paving the way for the Chinese-made turboprop to start flying in the country.

A team from CAAN was in China this September to verify the aircraft's performance, and was satisfied with the review, says Xian Aircraft.

Nepal Airlines had signed an agreement with AVIC International for two MA60s and four Harbin Y12 aircraft last December. Part of the purchase will be financed via a grant from the Chinese government.

The MA60 and its newer model the MA600 have mostly been sold to airline customers in developing countries. The turboprop has also in recent months had its fair share of incidents, leading various regulators to question its safety.

Flightglobal’s Ascend Online Fleets database shows that there are 76 MA60s worldwide, 28 of which are in storage.
