Flightglobal Achievement Awards 2012

John Garrison, Bell Helicopter

The title of Leader of the Year is awarded to the aviation or aerospace industry executive who has displayed exemplary business vision and inspirational leadership throughout the year, whether by steering a challenging project to fruition or bringing together an exceptional team.

The 2011 winner, Emirates Airline chief executive Tim Clark, steered the Middle Eastern airline’s trailblazing expansion in the past decade, and is the architect of its strategy to develop Dubai into the world’s premier international mega-hub. Clark has been evangelical in his conviction to accumulate an Airbus A380 fleet of eye-watering proportions, to deliver the necessary network connections and capacity.

Previous winners have included British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh, who battled to transform the flag carrier and slay its many demons – from intransigent unions to a stubbornly large cost base, and Bob Mitchell, vice-president of Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems, for his role in developing the world's first high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned air vehicle, the Global Hawk.
