History

Incorporated by an Emiri Decree issued on 26 June 1985 as the international airline of the United Arab Emirates. Operations began on October 25, 1985 with flights to Bombay, Delhi and Karachi. European destinations were added from July 1987, Far Eastern services in June 1990 and Australian services in June 1996. In April 1998 Emirates acquired a stake in Air Lanka (renamed Sri Lankan) at the same time as contracting to manage the airline for ten years. Emirates were announced as a launch customer for the Airbus A380 in 2000.
